BKS Iyengar’s Charitable Work

On the 96th anniversary of BKS Iyengar’s birth, many people around the world are celebrating his contributions to the practice of Yoga.

I believe to truly honor his legacy; we should remember what was also close to Mr. Iyengar’s heart, which was his charitable work at his birthplace, Bellur, in South India.

He donated all of his money several years ago as seed money to uplift the small impoverished town that offered few prospects for the residents and their children. Mr. Iyengar’s mission first began with bringing fresh water to Bellur. Afterwards he a built a free hospital, a free nurse training program to staff the hospital, a free primary school and a high school.

He renovated India's first and only temple dedicated to the venerable sage Patanjali. There is much still left to do in Bellur.

We may honor Mr. Iyengar’s legacy, and what was as close to his heart as the Yoga Sutras, by remembering and contributing to his beloved Bellur Project.

Dear Admirers of Yoga

I am writing as all of you have generously helped my Bellur Krishnamachar & Seshamma Smaraka Niddhi Trust in undertaking to help not only the people of my village, but also the surrounding villages.

The need is more than what I anticipated.

I have promised the Trust that I will personally do all I can financially but it seems that it is not enough.

As you all generously obliged with love and affection, I request you all to extend your helping hand further so that the works that are undertaken would be completed and leave some core money to maintain and run until the Trust finds means to do it on its own.
